Determining 8th Grade Students’ Misconceptions on the Subject of Square Root Numbers

ABSTRACT
Misconception in any subject of mathematics is an important issue that cannot be denied among students. This study was related to misconceptions in square root numbers. The purpose of this study is to determine students’ misconceptions, mistakes, and difficulties in the subject of square root numbers. For this purpose, a test for determining the misconceptions in this subject was prepared by the researcher and was subjected to 58 students who were enrolled in 8th grade in two classrooms of a public elementary school located in Ağrı city center. According to the findings of the study, it was found that students had difficulty in determining perfect square numbers, in showing the square root numbers on number line, in doing operations on square root numbers. The possible reasons for these misconceptions were discussed in this study.
